Kanban is a tool that helps us achieve continuous flow by setting limits on the amount of Work in Progress that can be in a products value stream at any point in time.

Kanban also offers us the concept of heartbeats or cadence against which we can perform regularly scheduled activities.  However, we should be cognisant of leans pursuit of perfection so the use of cadence type activities should be treated with care. As our organization and project team matures, we should be aiming to respond to changes in priorities as they happen and not on scheduled weekly, fortnightly or monthy heartbeats. Failure to react immediately could result in producing less valuable items which would be plain muda.

While we are still in our infancy and we are trying to resolve some dysfunctions in our current setup, cadence can be a helpful tool to ensure we get the relevant people…
